History of Niagara Falls
Ancient History
Niagara Falls first started forming over 10,000 years ago after the end of the previous Ice Age, wehn melting glaciers and snow caps flooded the Niagara River and sent millions of gallons of water off the edge of the Niagara Escarpment. Thanks to erosion, layers and layers of sediment and rock were pulled away and the river slowly expanded to the size we see today.
Native American Niagara Falls
Native Americans were the first people to truly discover the Falls, as they had been living in the area for hundreds of years, and how could you miss it? However, Niagara Falls was first written about and publicized by French explorers. It became a stronghold of the French and historical buildings can still be visited today, but it is important to also remember the legacy and impact of indigenous tribes in the area.
Niagara Falls Electricity
The forces working in Niagara Falls were so powerful that it became the birthplace of hydroelectric power, which we all enjoy the benefits of today. Famous inventor Nikola Tesla developed methods to transfer power that allowed him to harness the energy of Niagara Falls and provide power to nearby homes and businesses. These rudimentary hydroelectric generators have been scaled up and today produce massive amounts of electricity.
